How to get unstuck

When you have been dormant, stuck in a bad habit, or have been lacking in doing something for awhile it can be so hard to get out of that stage of being. You know what you should or could be doing. You know what will make it better. You know that only you can change it. But no matter how hard you try to get going you just can’t seem to get unstuck. You know that you have to have right thoughts about it so you say to yourself over and over again, “I can do this. I am worth it. It is in my best interest to do it. I will feel so much better once I get it done.” But yet you still are stuck. And if your anything like me you start to get a little upset with yourself because you know what you need to do but aren’t doing it.

I have come to find that if I say a small prayer asking for help and I just get up and start doing what I need to do, before I allow myself to think about it, I am much more likely to get it done. If I am trying to stop a thing, I am more successful if everytime I start to think about it I switch my thoughts to doing something else and I will do it so that my focus is on what I am doing instead of what I want to do. If I am dreading something and keep procrastinating I am more successful at doing it if I don’t think about it and just take care of it.

Sometimes we have to decide to just do something without wanting to do it. Sometimes we have to get down right mad at the fact that we are allowing ourselves to suffer and use the frustration as motivation. Sometimes we need to adjust our thoughts. But in any case we have to just start doing a thing without letting our feelings have a say.

Often times it is our feelings that hold us back from making progress. We sink into how we feel and allow that feeling to keep us from taking any steps forward. When our feelings rule in our lives we will always be in lack of something. The only way that a feeling can help us get unstuck is when we want a gratifying feeling more than to sit in a negative feeling. Still we can not rely on a feeling to do what we need to do. Our feelings change constantly and if we allow them to decide rather we do what we need to do or stay stuck, we will always be stuck and things will be incomplete.

I have found that it all comes down to a choice. A decision to choose life as the Bible says. We have to decide to do the things that bring lasting joy and peace instead of instant joy and peace. We have to choose to just do it instead of waiting to feel like doing it. And we can choose to enjoy the process instead of dreading it. We already have what we need to be able to do what we need to do through Jesus. It is in us but we have to choose use it and do it. We can choose to get unstuck and call on Jesus to empower us. Then we have to make the decision to do what we need to do to get unstuck. Nobody can do it for us and wishing it was done won’t get it done. It is a choice that only we can make. But we do have the help that we need already within us and we can do it by putting one foot in front of the other, following the Holy spirit’s guidance.
