Understanding ourselves

In order to understand who we are and why we do some of the things that we do, we have to understand exactly who it is that we are as a human being. We were all created as tri part beings. We are made up of our spirit, our soul, and our body. Each part of our being has a role in how we are as a person,  how we end up living our lives, and how happy we end up being throughout our lives. When I learned this and exactly how they all work together it somehow empowered me to be able to take over control of myself and change in ways that I never thought that I would. Or maybe just being able to understand myself better gave me the courage and determination that I needed to be able to make the changes that I wanted or needed to make within myself.

Our spirit is the deepest part of our being. Some say that it is the deepest part of our heart. It is the place within us  that Jesus resides if we have asked him to come live in us. It is the part of us that is pure and holy and blameless. It is the feeling inside us, when we are faced with a decision,  that tells us what the right thing to do or what is best for us in the situation would be. Our spirit knows what is best for us because it is led by Jesus. Therefore it is the part inside us that screams at us, “NOOOO… DON’T DO IT”,  when we are about to do something that we shouldn’t do or something that is not in the best interest of us. And it is also the quietest part of our being until we learn to pay attention to it and yield to its guidance.

Our soul is our mind, our will, and our emotions. It says I want, I think, I feel!! Our flesh or sinful nature is in our soul. Whenever we are acting in ways that our heart doesn’t agree with, it is coming from there. It is where the desires of pleasure, passion, greed, and selfishness reside. When we want to do something that we know is not good for us, it comes from our soul. The enemy influences all areas of and is the ruler of our souls. Our soul is the part of us that wants that two thousand calorie piece of cheese cake and wants it right then. It doesn’t care that it is going to cause us to gain weight or not feel good about ourselves after we eat it. It wants what it wants.

Our soul is what has to be constantly renewed when we give our lives to Christ . We can gain control over our souls by doing what our spirit directs us to do instead of what our soul wants. It will have a screaming fit at first but the more that we deny our soul what it wants, the quieter it gets. It will always be there of course but we can learn to not give into it. I know it may sound really easy to not give in to it but there are days when it is fired up and is very demanding that it gets it way. On days like that I will talk out loud to my soul and tell it to be quiet because it is not getting it’s way so it might as well give up trying.

Our body is the physical part of our being. And it does whatever it is told to do. It just goes along with the spirit and the soul. It is rather lazy and would prefer to just lay on the couch but it will do whatever it is told to do.But it is also the temple of God. Jesus lives in our body just like our soul lives in our body. That’s why we should take care of ourselves. We are showing respect to Jesus when we take proper care of ourselves. And it is also the way that the world views Jesus through us. When our actions change then we are showing the world Jesus threw our body.

Our spirit is already perfect and Jesus came to make our soul perfect. He came to teach us how to not give into the desires and temptations that linger there. And now that we have something else in us to guide us we just have to get use to listening to it instead of what we are use to listening to. When I realized this whole concept it helped me so much. And once I started to listen to my spirit instead of my soul I became happier and more productive. It wasn’t always easy but it is definitely worth it and has increased my quality of life.
