When we are in need of relationship, of connection with someone, and we reach out to others but only find ourselves alone, it can be hard to not feel rejected. When our heart needs that connection with someone it is natural for us to turn to friends, family, or social media to try to get it. We want or need someone to talk to, someone to interact with, someone to share our feelings and troubles with, so we turn to “our people” for it. But everyone is busy with work, home, school, or family and they all say, “I will get back to you” or “we will get together soon” and that leaves us to feel alone and possibly rejected. But the good news is that we have a friend, a brother, a father, that is always there and is actually waiting for us to reach out to him. Jesus is always there, and yet how often do we choose to go to him last?
I know for myself this has been a struggle. When I would be in need of relation, connection, I would turn to humans first. Then when they weren’t there for me when I needed them to be the devil would put lies in my mind that they don’t care about me, that I am all alone, that nobody likes or loves me. I read my bible and I know the truth of the word but when my heart needed connection with someone and I didn’t get it (because I was looking to the wrong places for it) the devil would win and I began to believe the lies that he told me. I still ask myself why I turn to man instead of Jesus when I need that connection and the only thing that I can come up with is that I am looking for tangible responses, meaning I want to see, touch, and hear the other person. I am all to outwardly trying to meet the need of something inwardly. Like I said, I know the truth of the bible, but I think for myself there is some unbelief that it is just as true for me as it is for everyone else. So this is an area that I am working on.
I am convinced (because of my own experience) that God makes people not have time for us sometimes or will get us to a place to where we don’t have anyone else to turn to so that we will turn to him. He wants us to go to him with all of our problems, concerns, needs, and wants. We have been made friends of God and our relationship to him has been restored through Jesus (Romans 5:10-21) because he wants to be there for us. He wants us to go to him before we go to anyone else. If we have someone else that we can go to and be able to get tangible responses then we may be less likely to go to him. Therefore he may need to make it to where we have no one else but him to turn to.
Even if we have tons of friends or family that we can go to, they may not be able to be there for us right when we need them to be or they may not want to hear about our issues. But God is always there and is concerned about every aspect of our lives. When we deal with humans we will always face disappointment, let down, and rejection at some point because we are all flawed and not everybody is going to be or do what someone else wants them to do, that is a part of life. That is also even more of a reason to go to God first when we need relation and connection. We can ask him to put someone in front of us that will give us the tangible things that we need and he may do that for us. But if we look to humans first we may get let down and then the devil will start with the lies and we will end up feeling worse than we did in the beginning.
We should always go to God first because we will never be rejected or put to the side until a later time with him. He is waiting for us to reach out to him. He wants to hear all about what’s going on in our hearts and our minds and lives. He will always give us the best advice but he will also just listen if that is what we need. If you have not been in continual relation with God it will take a little bit for you to be able to discern how he speaks to you and what he is saying but know that he is there and he is listening. You have to get to know the spiritual side of connection and open yourself up to pay attention to what is going on in the spirit so that you can sense what God is saying to you. Many times he will speak to us simply through his word so make reading your bible a part of your relation with him. But even if you feel that you are talking to the air in the room you have to trust and know that God is there with you, in your presence, and is listening to you. He has promised to never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6) and will never turn his back on you in any way(Hebrews 13:5). Go to God first in all things and trust that your needs will be met. We have someone that will always be there for us no matter what but we have to go to him.
