Our thoughts part 3 /emotions, words

Continuing on about how our thoughts affect our lives, today I will talk about how our thoughts affect our emotions which affect our words. In my previous post I talked about how our thoughts affect our feelings and emotions. Today I will talk more bout certain emotions, as well as, how our thoughts affect our words. I want to talk about how worry, anxiety, fear, and depression start with our thoughts and affect our lives. Because they cause so much misery I want to give a better understanding on these emotions.

The verb definition of worry is to allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles. It also says that worry causes fear and anxiety. Worry is the perfect thing for the enemy to use to set a snowball effect on our lives, through our thoughts. He will start with small thoughts of what we are facing and all the possible negative impacts that it could have. Then he starts with the constant negative thoughts and adds more and more on top of them. Then comes the “what if” questions. Then it’s the “how am I going to” questions. By then fear of the unknown is setting in and the “what am I going to do” questions start to play on repeat in our mind. Because of all the negative thoughts, our worry has caused fear in us and the fear has caused anxiety.

Once the anxiety sets in, it is no longer just thoughts of the troubles that we are facing at the time. We have begun to have negative thoughts about daily life. Because of the anxiety that we now have, we begin to worry about things that normally wouldn’t bother us. And with the enemy knowing this, he puts more troublesome thoughts in our mind. Things that we wouldn’t normally think twice about are now plaguing our mind. With all of the worry, anxiety, and fear that is within us, we start to get depressed. So on top of the thoughts that has caused our worry, anxiety, and fear, we are now thinking sad, down thoughts that are feeding the depression. The hope that we were holding onto is slowly deminishing with every sad, down thought that we have. Before we know it, we have become severely depressed, losing almost all hope.

I use the word ALMOST because we do have something to still be hopeful about. We can change our thoughts and lift the worry, anxiety, fear, and depression that is among us. Now there are cases that the depression and anxiety are caused by a medical condition. But even if that is the case, the person can help their depression by thinking good, positive, uplifting thoughts.

Our thoughts cause us to speak words that are either life giving or life taking. Because of the way that we think about things, we will begin to speak in the manner that we are thinking. Out of the heart the mouth speaks ( Matthew 12:34). The things are in us will eventually make their way out of us by the words that we speak. We can tell a lot about a person and even ourselves by paying attention to the words that are spoken. And our words are extremely important because we believe more of what we say than what anyone else says. Our words feed our emotions and give birth to the action that we take. If we are feeling down and having down thoughts we will speak down words. If we are feeling good and uplifting then our words will be positive and uplifting. But we can learn to use our words to fight against our feelings instead of feeding them. In order to change our words we have to change our thoughts first, and then align our words with our thoughts. When we think good and speak good then our feelings will catch up and become good. We can be feeling really down but choose to think about uplifting things and then speak uplifting words and the two will uplift our feelings.

The bible speaks of the truth, for every situation, that we need to cover up the lies that the enemy puts in our head. I see the word of God as medicine for our soul. Just like there is medication to help the symptoms and even heal any sickness or issue that we have going on in our physical body, the word of God is the medication we need to help and heal our souls. It is the truth that proves that everything that the enemy says to us is a lie. Anything that we think about that goes against what the bible says is a lie and we must not allow ourselves to take those thoughts as the truth. I am going to give you some examples of the thoughts I have had that contributed to my worry, anxiety, fear, and depression, as well as the thoughts and words that I would think and speak on purpose to stop the bad and wrong ones.

How am I going to be able to get what I need? I have no lack for God supplies all that I need (Philippians 4:19) I will never be able to _______. I can do whatever I need to do because I have Jesus living inside of me (Philippians 4:13).

I am going to get through this? I am a conqueror through Him who loves me and I will get through this (Romans 8:37).

I will always have this problem and I will never be able to stop _______. I am delivered from the power of darkness and sin, I am redeemed from the curse of sin, poverty, and sickness, I am stronger than the devil and I have control over him (Colossians 1:11&13, Deuteronomy 28:15-68, Galatians 3:13).

What if __________ happens, what if ________ doesn’t happen, I will never ________, I will always _________. I will trust God to do what I can not do and I am going to do what I can do. I am God’s child, He loves me no matter what, and I can do what I need to do. If something doesn’t work out then it was not meant to be. I am thankful for ________, I am blessed, I am a new person and learning new ways. I will _________ but I have to be patient with myself (Colossians 2:7, James 4:7, Philippians 3:14, Romans 1:7, Ephesians 2:4, Thessalonians 1:4).

When we think about how we can not do something or think of the what if’s of a situation we have to say that we can do it, that we will do it, and instead of the what if’s in a negative outlook, think and say the possible positive outcomes. Say things like, the situation has not changed but I believe that God is working it all out the way that it should be, something good is going to happen at anytime now, I am making progress, I will be free from ______, I do not let the enemy control me so I will do what I need to do, I am not fighting this alone because Jesus is right here with me.

We have to learn to use our words to build us and others up instead of tearing ourselves and others down. Our words have a lot of power to them and they can empower us or take what little bit of power that we do have away from us. We can help our emotions by our words but we can also make our emotions worse by what we say. We have to choose our thoughts and our words carefully so that we can use them to our advantage. And since we believe more of what we say than of what anyone else says, we must make sure that we speak the truth and speak of positive empowering things.

Begin to think and speak the truth that cover the lies of the enemy today. Do not allow your thoughts to feed worry, anxiety, fear, or depression. Instead us your thoughts to fight against such emotions and then align your words with those thoughts so that you are sure to win over your feelings.

Our thoughts part 2 /feelings

Continuing from my last post on our thoughts, we will talk about how they affect our feelings and emotions. Remember that after a thought comes a feeling or an emotion. Lets say that you are thinking about how you do not feel like getting up out of bed and facing the day ahead of you. As you lay there thinking about that you start to feel dread come over you. As the dread increases you notice that you are starting to feel energy zapped as well. Then the thoughts of what you are not looking forward to facing that day start running through your mind and you continue to lay there. When you finally get up you are in a bad mood, short with the spouse and kids, you spill your coffee, adding to your already fustrating start of the day. Because you allowed yourself to think negative thoughts, you started to have negative feelings that lead to bad emotions. When we have down, negative, bad, sad thoughts, we become depressed, down, sad, irritated, or angry. It is possible to lose all hope for everything by the thoughts that we think. Worry, anxiety, depression, anger, dread, doubt, guilt, shame, fear, are all fed by our thoughts.

Just as all those negative feelings are fed by our thoughts, happiness, peace, contentment, love, and freedom, are also fed by our thoughts. So when we think good, uplifting, positive, encouraging thoughts, we become uplifted happy, positive, outgoing, and encouraging. We can turn a bad mood into a good mood by thinking about good things, happy things, positive things. We can encourage ourselves by thinking about positive things. We can calm our anger by thinking about peaceful uplifting things.

To describe what I mean and ways that I used my thoughts to help my moods I am going to give you some examples of my thoughts and the thoughts that I made myself think on purpose.

If I was having thoughts of feeling sad or gloomy or down I would think things like, this is the day that the Lord has made so I will be happy and thankful, I am blessed, I have so much to be thankful for, today will be a good day, God loves me and is with me all the time. If I was thinking about something that I had to do that I really did not want to do I would think things like, I can do what I need to do with ease cause Jesus has my back, I am going to do what I need to do and be happy doing it, it will not take me long to do it and the sooner I do it the sooner it will be over. If I was feeling lazy and thought about how I did not feel like doing something it would make me more lazy so I would think things like, get your butt up do what you need to do, just do it, once you start on it that time will go by fast, I am going to get exercise doing it and I will feel much better, I am going to feel so much better once I get it done, I am looking forward to doing it, I want to get this done. By the time that I thought things like that for about 5-10 mins my mood would brighten up and I would have motivation to get it done. If I was thinking about how someone had done me wrong and I would start to feel upset I would think things like, My God is a God of justice and will pay back those who wrong others, I trust God to work it out for me, I will let the situation go and move on, I will not get myself upset because of what someone else has done even though I did not deserve to be done that way I choose to put it behind me and let it be, that person is not going to cause me to lose my peace. I will also think of ways that I have been blessed to get me out of that mindset. Since our thoughts and our feelings feed off of each other we have to keep in line. Our thoughts can make us feel and our feelings can make us have thoughts. So if they are not in sync we are in a mess. Thankfully we can choose our thoughts to make our feelings catch up. Our feelings will come and go but our thoughts tell them what way to go.

We can have a much brighter day simply by thinking about good, positive, uplifting, honorable, lovely thoughts. We can also have a much dimmer day by thinking down, wrong, negative, bad, hopeless thoughts. Lets use our thoughts to help us instead of harming us. Next time you are feeling down, sad, dreary, upset, hopeless, or afraid, think about what you have been thinking about and then choose to think of good things.

Importance of our thoughts

Like I said in previous blogs, our thoughts are superior to the rest of us. They dictate our feelings, our words, our actions, and even our character. When we have the wrong mindset, our thoughts have a negative affect on our lives.  Lets look at what the bible says about our thoughts, how they effect us, and how we can change them.

ROMANS 8:6 Says, so letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

This scripture tells us just how important our mind is to the overall of our lives. If we think bad, negative, down, harmful thoughts then the result of that is death to our spirit and heart. But if we think good, positive, uplifting, encouraging thoughts then we will have a life of joy and peace. Our thoughts can determine if we are happy or sad, at peace or angry, hopeful or hopeless.

ROMANS 12:2  ….Don’t copy the behaviors and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way that you think.

This scripture tells us that our behavior comes from how we think and that we change our behavior by letting God change the way that we think, making us a brand new person. It tells us that we can completely change ourselves  just by having right thinking.

ROMANS 13:14  …..and don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires

This scripture tells us that we do have a choice of what we think. We can choose if we will have good or bad thoughts. We can stop ourselves from thinking wrong and start thinking right.

EPHESIANS 4:23 ….let the Spirit renew your thoughts

This scripture tells us that we cover up wrong thoughts with true and right and Godly thoughts. We form new thought patterns by allowing the Holy Spirit to give us new and right thoughts.

PHILIPPIANS 4:8  Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

I think that this scripture and Ephesians 4:23 go hand and hand. I feel that this scripture tells us what kind of thoughts that the Holy Spirit will put in our mind, and that those are the ones that we should constantly think about. It tells us to focus our thoughts on what is good, positive, and encouraging.

There are many more scriptures about the mind and I encourage you to do some digging and study more on the mind of Christ so that you can know the mind that is in you, just waiting to be brought out into the light. I will cover a few more things about how important our thoughts are and how to fight for the right ones in the next few entries. As I stated before, in the previous blog, I want to give you the information on our thoughts in small doses so that you can ponder the information and really take it in. I can not express to you how important our thoughts are. They have the power to help or hurt you and I do not want anyone to hurt themselves (let the enemy control the mind) any longer. Freedom and happiness are just around the corner my friend.

Changing your life, Changing your thoughts

Our thoughts are something that we have to be reminded of often. Because of the importance of our thoughts, we must learn how to have right ones, and then constantly put into practice what we learn. Our thoughts can bring us to freedom, or they can keep us stuck where we are at. They can make us have a good day, or they can help us have a bad day. They can tell us how to feel and what to do. But we can train our brains to help us along in life instead of being the cause of our misery. Everything that we do starts with a thought. And if we have wrong thoughts, then we will not do what will help us to make a life of peace and joy.

If there is to be any kind of change in our lives we have to first change our thoughts about the change. For example, say you have a fear of rejection. You often think thoughts like, “Nobody will like me for who I am, that job won’t hire me, I might as well not even try because it won’t be good enough.” Change those thoughts to, “It is not my fault if someone does not like me, I am who I am and I love myself, I will try my best at it and give it my all and if it is not successful then it was not meant to be, I will not be or do everything right and that is okay.” When we think good thoughts we gain confidence to be able to face fears.

It was life changing when I learned that I could choose what I thought about. I didn’t know that I could choose the thoughts that I thought. I thought that I could not help what went on in my mind. Once I learned that I could stop bad thoughts and replace them with good ones I was determined to get those bad, negative thoughts out of my head. Once I learned that I was contributing to my misery and unhappiness, I was determined to stop hurting myself and to start helping myself. It takes constant work and patience with yourself, but it is totally possible.

I had a terrible mindset full of negative thoughts about myself, life, and everything else. The first thing that I had to tackle was the thoughts about myself. Because until I thought better of myself, and believed that I could do whatever I needed to do, nothing else could change in me. Until I approved of myself, I would always change my actions and behaviors to suite those around me, and I could not be true to and happy with myself. I had years of bad thoughts that I had cover up with the right and good ones and it was going to take a lot longer than I thought it would. Matter of fact, I still to this day, have to stop a bad thought and replace it with the right one. It is a life long process and a never ending battle if we are going to keep bad thoughts from consuming our mind.

When we are being attacked in our mind by the enemy we have to use God’s word, the truth, to cover up the lies that he is trying to put in our mind. All of the negative thoughts and lies that come to our mind are from the enemy. He wants nothing more than to make us not believe in ourselves, think that we will never be able to do or have something, that we are worthless and of no value. He does not want us to have any type of victory in our lives. And he surly does not want us to be happy, uplifting, peaceful people that spread joy and peace to others. He knows that if he can put wrong thoughts in our head and get us to think those thoughts over and over that we will begin to believe them and take them as the truth, even though it is not true. I believe that any thought that has “I can’t,” “I won’t,” “I’ll never,” “I’m only,” all come from the enemy. If he can get us to believe that we can’t do something then we will never even try to do it. If he can get us to think,we won’t be worth anything then we will not live up to our potential and have the best life that we can have. If he can get us to believe we’ll never be able to move up in the company then we will not do our best at our job to have the opportunity to advance in the company. If he can get us to believe that we are only a wife or husband, a dishwasher, an addict, a screw up, a failure, or a lost cause, then we will never be happy with who we are and will not become more, or better. The enemy knows exactly where to attack us in order to keep us from having the peace, joy, love, contentment, satisfaction, and wholeness of life. So it is absolutely vital to our well being that we learn how this all works and how we can fight, and win, the battles for our best life, starting with our thoughts.

I am going to take a few days to try to go more into detail about how our thoughts control our lives and ways that we can fight the battle to win the war on our thoughts, defeating the enemy in every attack. Because I have witnessed for myself how life can change by changing our thoughts, I want to share with you the important things that helped me along the way, in hopes that it will help you in your battle to your best life. Nothing is going to change over night, it is going to take time, and take on purpose actions on your part, but I promise you that if you stick to it and do not give up, you will win the battle as well. Tomorrow I will talk more about how the mind works and controls every other thing about us. We will get into the ways to battle the enemies attacks on our mind the next couple of entries. I want to give you small doses at a time so that you can ponder the words that I speak to you and can embed them into your mind in preparation for your battle. I believe that when we take in important information,  such as this, we are able to remember it, keep it in the front of our minds, and put what we have learned into practice better when we do not over load ourselves all at once with the information. And for that purpose I want to take it slow and possibly repeat some of the most important information so that it gets down into your soul, embedded in your mind.

Distractions

A roaming mind can keep us from the will of God and distract us from important things. How many times have you been watching, listening to, or reading something that was rather important or really speaking to your spirit, and next thing you know (in your mind) you are at home in the kitchen, at the gym, or at the office going threw paperwork? It happens to me often. We end up missing some very important information because we have allowed distractions to interrupt our focus. The enemy loves to get our mind off of, or away from, anything that is going to be of any help to us.

Being present in the moment with our full attention on the matter at hand is challenging with all of the distractions in the world now days. There are so many things that can take our focus off of what is going on right in front of us in this busy world that we live in. I wonder how many times a day that the Lord tries to speak to us through someone, something, or a situation, and we miss it because we are not paying full attention.

I can not tell you how many times I have been reading something only to get to the end of a few pages to realize that I have no idea what I have just read because my mind has been elsewhere. As I read it again, with full focus on what I am reading, it is like I am reading it for the very first time because although my eyes read, my mind was elsewhere, and did not take in the information that I was reading. This is what the Lord used to bring to my attention my problem with a roaming mind and how to correct it. Every time that I am reading and I notice that I am thinking about something else, I stop and tell myself to focus on what I am reading and I go back to where I last remember what I was reading about. Sometimes I will have to do that several times and read the same paragraph time and time again before my mind will stop wondering and I pay full attention to what I am reading. But as I discipline my mind in this manner it does get a little better each time and I am glad to say that I am able to focus and keep my mind on what is in front of me much more now.

There have been times that I have had to ask someone to repeat what they have just said to me because my mind got distracted with the thoughts of something that I had going on or something that I had to make sure that I took care of that day. I use to not ask that of someone when I had not paid attention to what they were saying because I did not want them to think that I did not care about what they had to say. I would act like I was paying attention and give a general response or change the subject all together until I gave the wrong response one day and really hurt my friend’s feelings. I realized that day that it was better to ask them to repeat themselves and tell them that my mind had wondered off.

The manner in which we get distracted from what is going on in the moment are many. But if we are getting distracted from something that is very important, life giving, or positive, it may very well be the enemy putting that distraction in us. He wants to distract us from anything that is good and will bring any type of positivity, peace, joy, power, love, wisdom, or spiritual growth to us or others. He will even use T.V. or music or a phone to distract us if he can. But we can fight against that manner of attack  by simply turning them off. We can get distracted by the kids, the animals, our spouse, the noise of the dryer going, the honk of a horn from a passing car, the thoughts of what we are cooking for dinner, the thoughts of the situation that our friend is in, and on and on. But as long as we pull our attention away from the distraction and back onto what is in front of us then we are defeating the enemy from his attack of distraction.

Whenever you notice that you are not paying attention to what is going on in front of you, stop yourself and gain focus back on what is in front of you. Even if you have to do that fifty times a day, keep doing it. The more that you do this, the more that you will be able to pay full attention to what you need to pay attention to because you are training your mind to stay focused. Don’t get discouraged when you have bad days and your mind is all over the place, thinking about everything but what you need to be focusing on. We will all have days like that but we have to keep up the fight, putting our full attention on what is in front of us.

Thoughts part 5 /relationships

As our thoughts affect every part of our being, they also affect our relationships. Because of the way that our thoughts affect our actions and our words, we could lose friendships, partnerships, and close connections with others. Our thoughts also affect the relationship that we have with ourselves and the Lord. Because our relationship with ourselves and the Lord are most important we will start with how our thoughts affect them.

Our relationship with ourselves and the Lord go hand and hand. If we do not have a good relationship with ourselves then we will not have one with the Lord. And if our relationship with the Lord is not good then our relationship with ourselves won’t be good either. If we do not love ourselves, approve of ourselves, believe in ourselves, and forgive ourselves, then we will not think that God can love, accept, believe, and forgive us either. If we think that God is mad at us, doesn’t accept or love us, Doesn’t forgive us, and has given up on us, then we will not accept, love, forgive, and will give up on ourselves. In order for us to love ourselves just as we are and right where we are at in life at the moment we have to believe that God does first. If we are going to be free from all shame, guilt, and regret we have to believe that we are forgiven for our wrong doings and that we are not looked down upon from God.

We will not be able to be in a good relationship with ourselves or God if our mind is filled with all kinds of junk and lies about ourselves and God. We can not know (believe) that we are forgiven and loved if we think things like, “God is mad at me, I am nothing but a screw up, I am a bad person”. Because the enemy knows how wrong thoughts about ourselves and God affect us, this is an area that he does his best to sneak lies into our mind about. He will put thoughts like,” your nothing but a failure, all you do is mess up and disobey God, God has turned his back on you, God does not love you, you are a lost cause, God can not use you anymore”. He wants to bring up our past and try to use that against us. He will put guilt in your heart for every little thing that you do not do right. Anything, and in any way, that he can get us to think about things that goes against what the word of God says are lies, and are simply not true about ourselves or about God. That is why it is so important that we read the bible for ourselves, so that we can know the truth. If we do not know the truth about something and we are being lied to about it, we will not know that it is a lie, and we will believe that it is the truth. If we are going to have good relationships with ourselves and the Lord we are going to have to learn the truth about what amazing people we are and the relationship that we already have with God, because of Jesus.

When we have wrong thoughts about ourselves and God we have to stop the thought and replace it with the truth. We can cover the lie of God does not love us with While I was still his enemy He chose to die for me because he loves me, cover the lie of I am nobody with I am the head and not the tail, above and not beneath, cover the lie that God does not forgive me with I am forgiven by the blood of Christ. There is a scripture of truth in the bible to cover up every lie that is put in our head.

When we have wrong thinking about others it affects our relationship with them. If we think that everyone is out to get us or hurt us in some way then we will not trust anyone. If we have thoughts of jealousy or envy then we will not be able to have a healthy relationship with others. Our thoughts affect our feelings and our actions which will affect our relationships. We have to think the best of everyone in order for us to be able to have good relationships. We will not be able to love someone if we are having thoughts that are unloving about them. We will not be able to treat someone kind if we are having unkind thoughts about them. If we are going to have good healthy relationships we have to have good thoughts towards that person. Let’s not allow the enemy to use our thoughts to destroy our relationships, leaving us lonely. Let’s fight the lies that he puts in our head about ourselves and God with the truth of who we are and how much God loves us already.

Thoughts part 4 /actions

We have been talking about how our thoughts effect our lives. We have seen how they affect our feelings/emotions and our words. We are beginning to see how they can control every part of our being for better or for worse. Today I want to talk about how they affect our behavior/actions. We have to think right if we are going to act right. We have to think good if we are going to be good. We have to think successful if we are going to be successful. If we are going to be kind and loving to others than we have to think kind and loving thoughts towards them.

The best way that I know to explain this point is to use a personal experience to explain how our thoughts determine our actions/behavior. When I was about 12 years old I was told that I was fat, stupid, and would never amount to anything. That I would fail at everything in life and I would never be loved. Those horrible words played over and over in my mind, day after day, for a long time. Because I replayed those words in my head over and over, I began to take them as truth, and that I was those things that were said to me. I began to believe that I was fat, stupid, and would never amount to anything. I believed that I would fail at everything I tried to accomplish in life and that no one would ever love me. Well because I felt like I was stupid, I would not try to learn in school. Because I felt like I would never amount to anything, I never expected anything good to come of me. Because I felt like I would always fail, I never tried anything. Because I felt like no one would ever love me, I became unlovable and I allowed people to treat me bad.

Then I had gotten to the point that I was always thinking that I was nothing but a screw up and that I could not ever do anything right. That caused me to act bad in all kind of ways. Because I had played those wrong thoughts about myself in my head over and over, I believed that I was those things, therefore that is the way that I acted. I did not believe that I could do or be any better than what I was, at that moment. I wanted better for myself and my life but no matter how bad I wanted it, I could not seem to make any positive changes (that would last).

Proverbs 23:7 says that for as a man thinks in His heart, so is he. So what ever we think is what we will be or become. In order for us to be able to do or be anything we have to believe that we are capable of doing or being it. And we can not believe it if our thoughts are saying something different. for example, say you were at the pool and your friend says, “lets dive in and swim across the pool.” You have taken swimming lessons but it has been awhile since you have been in the pool. You know that you were taught how to swim but your mind is telling you that it has been a long time since you have swam and you might not remember how to. As you stand there and look at the 12ft of water in front of you, those thoughts continue to run through your mind. “What if you jump in and you have forgot how to swim” plays over and over in your mind. Before you know it you are telling your friend that you can’t swim, all because your thoughts have stole the confidence that you had in knowing how to swim. Because you did not believe with all your might that you can swim, your thoughts have made you lie to yourself and stopped you from doing something that you could do.

If we are going to be able to do or be anything, we have to first believe that we can do or be it. And we believe it by thinking that we can do or be it. I will never be able to stop doing something if I have thoughts of not being able to stop it. I will never overcome anything if I think that I can not overcome it. I will never accomplish a thing if I have thoughts of “I can’t” or “I won’t”. I will be lazy if I think of how lazy I am. Even if I can do something but I think that I can’t, I won’t be able to do it because I do not think that I can.

We have to have right thinking if we are going to have right actions and behaviors. Do not think for a moment that you will be able to change anything at all, before you first change the way that you think about it. Once we get our thoughts going in the right direction we will be able to get our actions and behaviors to follow. We will be more likely to accomplish something that seems impossible for us to accomplish simply by changing our thoughts to thoughts of encouragement and positive reinforcement. By thinking that we can do a thing over and over again, we build up confidence in ourselves and are more likely to be successful at it. Use your thoughts to aide good behaviors and right actions. Think about the power that you have inside of you and the gifts that you have. Think about all the possibilities that you have. Think good thoughts.
